Dune premiered in 1984 and is directed by David Lynch, The movie is adapted from a book series of the same name written by Frank Herbert and published in 1965. The screenplay is by David Lynch. The movie is set in the far future where humanity has colonies across the stars. On a desert planet called Arrakis, a drug known as spice is produced. During this time, a conflict emerges between the various houses of the space empire.
Dune is a movie that garners mixed feelings. There are good things about this movie. The main positive is its rich backstory being reflected well in the adaptation. I could feel that there are a lot of elements in this movie that had history behind it. The things that come to mind are the drug known as spice, the Spacing Guild, Fremens, and Bene Gesserits. These are reflected in the plot and screenplay. The movie is also well directed. This movie does not utilize the same David Lynch techniques as Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive, or Lost Highway. Dune is a much more grounded movie in its direction. The movie is also simple to follow with much, of the story being simple. The actors do a good job generally. The highlights here are Francesca Annis, playing Lady Jessica, Kyle MacLachlan, playing Paul Atreides and Kenneth McMillan, playing Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. These actors do a good job with the roles they are given.
What the movie does not do well outweigh the positives. The effects of this movie have not aged well. The green screen in this movie is apparent as the movie closes on its run-time. The later scenes with the sand worms have this apparent green screen to them. Thankfully it does not detract from the movie much but it is a sign that the movie has not and will not age well. The shields that the characters employ are also poor in the quality of the special effects.
The main problem with the Dune movie is its plot and lack of world explanation. The characters have an established relationship with the world and this is not explained at all in the movie. This movie would fare better with audiences that have read the books and understand them. I am not one of those people. There is minimal exposition which can be seen as a good thing by some audiences.
Despite the movie's flaws. I would still recommend Dune. The movie can be a fun flick for most audiences.
